British wildlife is rich and varied and there are over 600 species of British birds alone. If you’re lucky enough to have a garden or outdoor space, you may have seen some common species such as blue tits or robins. The decline in natural habitats means that our gardens are more important than ever for our feathered friends, but your space needs to be attractive to birds all year round.
Birds are important for biodiversity and they can also help keep your garden clear of weeds, reduce the number of pests and help to pollinate plants. With this in mind, if you’ve been wanting to attract more birds to your garden, read on to find out how.
Birds need shelter from the cold and this is especially important during the winter months. You could add nest boxes to trees, or plant dense evergreen trees and shrubs to provide shelter. Make sure any nest boxes are high up enough and not easily reached by predators.
Add a bird bath
Birds need a water supply to drink and bathe in all year round. A stone birdbath is a stylish addition to your garden, and it’s practical too. Place it in an area that’s sheltered from predators and ensure the water stays clean and fresh. Check in winter to make sure it doesn’t freeze over – you can defrost ice with warm water from the kettle if necessary.
Provide food sources
Berries are an excellent food source for birds, so the more berry trees you have, the better. It’s also a good idea to provide additional food in bird feeders dotted around the garden. This is especially important during winter when food can be scarce; keep feeders topped up with natural foods like sunflower seeds and peanuts.
Keep things clean
Bacteria and fungal spores can build up on bird feeders and bird baths, causing harm and even death to visiting birds in your garden. Clean feeders and your bird bath regularly using a bottle brush, warm water and veterinary disinfectant.
