It’s one of the oldest trades in existence. The art of stonemasonry, like the stones, is ancient. No need to worry, we’re not going to talk the entirety of the history of stonemasonry. Over 6000 years of history may leave you a little overwhelmed!
However, we’ll take a quick look at some of the highlights from the stonemasonry world since it’s early days.
More Than Just Rock
Identifying the potential behind the seemingly simple stone found across the planet is arguably one of the key moments in human history. It was during the Neolithic revolution, that humankind first discovered the wonders of agriculture and harnessed the power of fire.
Entire cities were built from stone, intricately made buildings and statues were still left standing long after their creators were. Just think of many of the world wonders. The great pyramids of Egypt, the amazing Inca architecture, and the Colosseum in Rome, all still standing today.
Stonemasonry wasn’t just utilised as a skill for building alone. Communication through the ages was made possible. Where paper would have long deteriorated stone writings live on. One example would be the hieroglyphics written throughout ancient Egyptian culture, though reading them nowadays is a skill in itself.
Timber Makes a Comeback
Stone may be a sturdier and more hard wearing material than wood, but that doesn’t mean it’s enjoyed consistent popularity. During the 9th and 10th century timber began to make a return in Western Europe.
Although stone based buildings were still being created. Timber did enjoy a resurgence around the time the Western Roman Empire fell.
Stonemasons have always been a tight-knit bunch. So much so that a society of stonemasons was created. There were 3 levels throughout the guild: apprentices, journeyman, and master masons.
It was during the renaissance era that the members decided to make a change. From this time, members in different professions were permitted to enter the guild. The origins of fraternal societies can even be traced back to the stonemasons society itself.
