Typical Materials Used by Stonemasons

Here at Wrights of Campden, we pride ourselves on every aspect of our stonemasonry and take the time and intricate detail to supply works that are built with skill and precision. The basis of any stonemasons creation is the materials they use, and our precise, handcrafted work can only be achieved with the best materials. Whether you're looking for a breathtaking fireplace to be the focal point of your front room or a bespoke ornament to top off your garden design, the great materials we typically use include the following:

Cotswold Limestone

Quarried in the Cotswolds, this unique stone is often described as a 'honey coloured yellow' and is popular for many different uses, although it can provide a particularly stunning fireplace, floor or doorway when handcrafted and finished by our experienced stonemasons.

Ancaster Limestone

With a slightly less distinctive colour than Cotswold Limestone, Ancaster can vary from creamy white/beige to greys and is best and most often used to complement a modern building for facing or flooring.

Bath Limestone

This material has been used throughout Southern England and it's easy to see why, as it is perfectly suited to all building and carving work whether it is for inside your property or the exterior.

Great Tew Ironstone

A special material that we are proud to be using, Great Tew Ironstone dates back several hundred years and is unique to Britain. This offers unlimited opportunity and is without comparison.

Portland Limestone

Buckingham Palace? St. Paul's Cathedral? There's many more we could name, as Portland Limestone is last on the list but definitely not least. You will have come into contact with this strong stone time and time again.

Our materials speak for themselves and when crafted with the expertise that has been passed down throughout our family of stonemasons, they will provide you with a structural or aesthetic work of art that will set it apart from the everyday, conventional materials that are now commonplace.
